Haiti (pronounced ‘Heiti’) is a Caribbean country and occupies the island of Hispaniola along with the Dominican Republic. It is the poorest country in the Americas. It has a population of about 9,035,536 as of 2009. French and Haitian Creole are the official languages.

Last January 12, 2010, a 7.0 magnitude earthquake struck Haiti and devastated the capital city, Port-au-Prince. Although the exact number was difficult to determine, reportedly more than 230,000 people were killed. The Presidential palace, Parliament and many other important structures were destroyed, along with countless homes and businesses leaving many homeless.

The ICM sisters have been in Haiti since 1977.  Sr. Enden Mordeno, ICM, is a Filipina sister from Leyte who is missioned to Haiti.  Together with the other ICM sisters in Haiti, she spends her energy to help bring the Good News of God’s love to the people.  She is very passionate about the care of the environment.  In collaboration with government engineers, Sr. Enden, along with other ICM sisters, have facilitated the creation of two human-made lakes for the people to provide water and a reliable food source for the people.
